OV Week End (3/13/2010): What's Wrong w/Washington

: So what!??!?

The pundits have been at it over the last number of weeks to tell the world what is wrong with Washington. What is clear is that there is no courage to make the tough choices necessary to bring us back from the edge of the abyss. What the Economist depicted is absolutely right on. I am sure that Mr. Linclon will look at the cast of characters in Washington now and just shake his head in disgust.

Let's begin with a bit of a reality check. Dr. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia laid out a very scary set of facts that is in the public domain. He reminded the World in his Time Magazine Article that the Federal Budget has a budget gap of 1.6 Trillion Dollars. That amounts to 10% of the gross domestic product of the entire country!!! The current growth of Public Debt Amounts to almost 60% of the Gross Domestic Product and is slated to grow to 70% of the Gross Domestic Product at the current rate of spending. The revenue being collected by the Feds goes to pay for the following: The military, Health, Social Social Services and Interest on the National Debt. That's about 17% of the intake. Everything else the Feds do is being financed out of borrowing. This includes Education, Homeland Security and all the other functions of the Federal Government. As for the deficit, it amounts to $ 4400 for each and every American.

In the midst of this perfect storm, both parties are sticking to their talking points. The Republicans are beating the drums of tax cuts, tax cuts and more tax cuts. Well, someone needs to tell them that tax cuts is going to blow up an already lousy situation. Presidential wannabes Like Mike Pence need to be able to have the courage to say that there needs to be an increase in order to provide the long-term viablity that is necessary. The Democrats also need to stop wanting to score political points by demonizing Republicans. The Republicans are not really helping themselves by simply acting as the Party of No. Their true colours and aspirations has been proven time and time again by changing the rules. Their latest talking point: Their campaign slogan to repeal healthcare.

Dr. Sachs called for Republican Statesmen to stand up to help change the paradigm. When I read his thought, my reaction was: yaaaaaaaaaaaaaah right!!! There needs to be a radical rethink of budget and tax policy in the United States and a real need to bring back a sense of fiscal sanity while preserving the best of the programs that have continued to make a difference. We can't do no less.

You're understanding of economics is mind-numbing, as usual, Mike. Tax cuts allow people to keep (and spend) more of their own money, thus helping the economy. They enable small businesses (our major employers) to expand and hire more people. Cutting garbage out of the government budget is also necessary. If you have no money in the bank, do you take out a loan that you can't repay and waste it on ridiculous things? Our government does. Have you heard all the asinine "projects" the last "stimulus" bill is going for? Shovel ready? HA! Sean Hannity listed 102 give-aways that are total wastes and produce no jobs, just bigger debts.

Oh yeah, Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Madison and all the greats of history would gag with disgust at what liberals have done to their wonderful country. Not one of them believed in dragging us down the toilet of debt and leaving it for future generations to deal with, Mike. Not a single one of them.

I think you're out to lunch because you have no clue about the actually reality of fiscal policy today. It has been the misguided and misconstrued tax cuts. And BTW, for someone who claims that America is sliding away towards socialism and claims that the syllabus did not work, a signifcant percentage of the stimulus was in fact tax cuts. You need to emerge from your fantasy coccon and actually take a look around.

Gee Mike, I had no idea that your expertise in economics exceeded that of Walter E. Williams! WOW! According to the government's own records, tax cuts do work to improve the economy, but I'm sure you know more than all the experts, right? Or does the former mainstream media know more and you just blindly follow them?

As part of the develpoment of "outsiders" I do read and research quite a bit. What I have realized is that the more I know, the more I don't know. That's the difference...unfortunately it seems as if you do.

What you don't seem to realize is that there indeed have been targeted tax cuts already. What you and some of the experts seem to not realize is that simply doing mindless tax cuts is not going to get us out of the long-term ditch.

Thanks for your visits...appreciate the dialogue.

Did you notice any "targeted tax increases" Mike? Like the proposal to add taxes to medical equipment, beyond the already high prices? How about taxing junk foods and sodas ( since Michelle want us to be both healthy and broke)? Or the tax increase on cigarettes? Or the tax on the wonderful healthcare garbage that we'll pay for years before seeing any "benefits"?

I'm not a know-it-all, Mike. Much of what I know is from reading the work of experts (not a bunch of charlatans like the glo-bull warming crowd). Sorry if you are offended by the fact that I studied geology (among other things) in college and remember what I learned. I became a conservative because of independent study and paying attention to both history and current events, then correlating the two. Logic, reason and common sense generally work better than believing that there is a new crisis behind every rock (especially after seeing that they're mostly created to distract from real issues) and jumping, head first onto the latest band wagon.

I am not offended in the least way. I appreciate your visits and your comments. This is what true debate should be.

Keep 'em coming!!!
