: OMG!!!
As I continue to contemplate the next stage of "outsiders", I wanted to break my sabatical to talk about the UK elections. As I write this, I am monitoring BBC's live coverage of the UK elections coming in.

The votes are continuing to come in. The conservatives, led by David Cameron, are in the lead right now. The Labour Party is heading for defeat and a decisive defeat. What I am fascinated by is how the elections are counted, how all the candidates stand at a "count" being reported by a returns officer. I also am quite impressed with how the BBC is covering this. There is no bias at all and both the labour and the conservative lumaniries being interviewed are being given a tough go of it by the BBC presenters. The US networks must learn and learn a great deal from this even handed coverage and analysis of the election process. I realize it is wishful thinking--but one always have to be hopeful.

From what I am seeing, it appears that the UK will be faced with a hung parliament. A hung parliament means that a government will not have a majority. There are major swings towards Conservatives. The Liberal Democrats, though, seems to have fizzled out. There are no patterns emerging here. The old adage of all politics being local is being very much in play in the UK right now.

I eagerly await the onslaught by the so-called US Conservatives, though. I caught a glimpse of Hannity on Fox. Hannity noted the "Decisive" swing towards conservatives. He noted that the socialists were being kicked out. This blanket declaration by Hannity shows how stupid, idiotic and uninformed these guys are. David Cameron's ascendency was because he understood that he had to be different than the ravages of the Thatcher Era. He was the kind of guy who rode his bike to work, focused on some key issues and repeatedly underscored his committment to the National Health Service. Hannity and the rest of the Conservative Cabale need to listen to Cameron's keynote at the Conservative Conference. He also sought out to change the face of conservatives. If David Cameron was in the United States, he would have the same fate as Charlie Crist and all the other mainstream Republicans who seem to be eaten up by the Sarah Palin-Rush Limbaugh-Glen Beck crowd.

When the number of seats and the total number of votes cast are added up, the Conservatives are in the minority. But the British System is funny. The Conservatives are forecast to receive 37% of the vote. So, this notion of somehow the swing being a harbinger of the US Midterm elections is simply misguided and not correct by a long shot. What is clear is that the people did want change after 13 years of Labour Government.

Almost 450 races have been called. The Conservatives are 20 seat short of the majority based on the latest projections. There are a lot of smaller players that will serve as kingmakers. It will be fascinating to see how this turns out as Gordon Brown drove up to Labour Party Headquarters to assess his options. It is going to be tight.

: What Now?
The British General Elections is in full swing. Watching the debates by the three leading candidates was fascinating in providing the British People the clear choices they faced as they geared up to vote for Parliament.

Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has come out of nowhere to serve as a potential kingmaker. I view him as a bit of a fresh wind in providing a centrist, realistic alternative to the current policies being advocated by the Labor and Conservative parties. The conservativse are polling ahead, but I think the lingering doubts still remain. From the analysis I have seen, apparently the Chancellor (Treasury Secretary) candidate for the Conservatives, George Osborne, seems not to impress that much.

The possibliity of a hung parliament (or as David Steele of the Liberal Democrats noted, a balanced parliament) will be uncharteted territory for the country. One thing I will be looking is the influence of Murdoch-Owned Media on the outcome. The London Independent ran a front page story noting that, "..Rupert Murdoch does not decide the elections..you do...". Apparently James Murdoch was not too happy about it. The Murdoch-Owned Rags have gone after Nick Clegg to discredit him after the surge he enjoyed. Hopefully the British People will see past the rhetoric and vote for a party that they believe will help transform their lives as the World continues to change before our very eyes. I also view it as a harbinger of the U.S. Midterms as well.

: Preview of the US Elections, pehaps?
The UK Finance Minister, Alistair Darling, presented his Government's Final Budget before the British General Elections that is bound to be called within the next five weeks. The UK has been in election mode since earlier in the year and the tossle has been fascinating to observe.

The UK has been starting to recover. There has been some stability achieved. However, the long term economic health of Britain continues to be of concern. The UK Public Debt has been apparently on par with Greece. Greece was just given a lifeline by the European Union. There is not much money right now to pay for tax cuts. Strikes are going on. Investors are selling the British Pound precisely because of the challenges at hand. Whomever actually wins, it has its' work caught out for it

: The Plight of the Ports & Future Indicators
Throughout the past number of months, I had periodically written about the continued economic challenges faced by the world and to assess where things stand. I called it a Tsunami because I sense that there is still rough sailing ahead. I still view the apparent recovery to be quite fragile.

What happened with Dubai was the latest in a series of jolts the worldwide economic system has seen. Eurozone's growth seems to be tempered, although the UK seems to be turning things around and will apparently start to grow again. That should make Gordon Brown happy as he gets ready to face the British Voters next year

The inferno around Athens continues on with no end in sight. The chilling images are scary to say the least. This is the second major fire Greece has seen so far. Reports I am seeing note that some 10,000 people have evacuated. Winds have abated a bit, but the danger still remains

Ahmadinejad On a Roll.....

May 25th 2009 19:44
: And?
Quite a Cast of Characters

The incumbent President has been on a roll. Throughout the past two days alone, he has hosted a summit on Afghanistan with the The Presidents of Afghanistan and Pakistan, has had two news conferences and has been busy on the campaign trail. This is while his opponents are relegated as a afterthought in Iranian Official Media

"Green Shots": Fact or Fiction

May 15th 2009 07:32
: Not as clear cut.....
As I have been assessing the state of the economy, I continue to be amazed at the "happy talk" going on. The happy talk is just happy talk.

This past week has seen Chrysler in bankrupcy. 789 Dealers will be shut down within the next thirty days. An average dealer employs around 30 people. That's over 21,000 people losing their jobs. GM is getting closer to bankrupcy. I have seen reports that they are accelerating payments to their suppliers. Walmart made money. But, their sales are down. Retail sales continue to slide. Unemployment continues to rise. Despite all the optimism and happy talk, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I did almost fall of my chair in laughter when I read the reaction of the German Economy Minister to the stress test the Treasury conducted on the big banks

Our World This Week

March 29th 2009 07:46
: Quite Amazing!!!
I was witness to another busy and hectic week on the political front. There was of course the Budget the Obama Adminstration has sent up to the U.S. Congress. The U.S. Congress has started to write the legislation to get the process moving forward. It was also a week that saw the President throw the gauntlet down to the Republicans in the House to produce their own alternative. They did produce one. From the review so far, though, there are no numbers to back the so called roadmap they have proposed. I will be anxious to see what they have to say on this next week.

As I was witness to the debate, I was laughing at how the President seemed to be getting it from both sides. On the one hand, I saw the so-called right (or conservatives) in the country noting how the President was taking the country down the path to socialism and communism. I was really laughing when I read Dick Morris' comments and then visited his new YouTube Channel he had just laid out. On the other hand, I was also just as amazed and laughing at how the so-called left (or liberals) were keen to attack the President. Paul Krugman's admonition about the President's Public-Private Partnership as "cash for trash" was just one example. They are noting that the clintonites will help drive a centrist economic policy that will leave many out in the cold

: Quite Disturbing......
After a concerted campaign, the EU agreed to remove the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran (PMOI) from its list of banned terror organizations. The PMO and its' umbrella organization, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, are fighting the Islamic Republic. They are right now based on Iraq. Iraq has told them they have to leave. I am sure that they will dissipate into Europe now that they are no longer regarded as a terrorist organization.

The PMOI pushed the fiction that it was put on the list to appears the Islamic Republic. Now, what the PMOI fails to understand is that it took up arms against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. It conducted terror campaings. It created a cult-like culture in its' little enclave called Ashraf outside Baghad and was supported by Saddam Hussein for years. It "claims" that it wants democracy for Iran. It aims to "determine" through the appointment of the PMOI leader's wife, Maryam, the direction for the country. The people seem not to matter

The Prince of Wales is 60 Years Old

November 14th 2008 05:58
: May we forever be fascinated w/them
Just like all "ordinary people", I have had a special fascination with the British Royal Family. They have had the most colorful of lives, for sure. Yet, as the BBC said in a tribute, Charles is one man that has tried to make a difference for the past 40 years. I was really impressed when he started the Prince's Trust in 1976 with his Navy Severance pay of Seven Thousand Four Hundred Pounds. This is what making a difference is all about.

I have also read about how he has also ruffled some feathers. That is the price one pays for leadership, for sure. But, I think our world continues to be blessed by such who have used the power and privilege that the Lord granted them to make a difference. From what I have read, that has been instilled in his sons as well. I wish him well in his continued quest to serve the British People, the Commonwealth and the world

: Funny Guy!!!
Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister, seems to have a sense of humor. The bold plan he announced to recapitalize British Banks were the precursor for the plans annouced by Europe and the United States. I don't want to gloat, but I wrote this about five days before the plan by the UK was announced. I advocated full nationalization. This has in effect happened because of the capitalization plan and the implicit guarantees world governments have annouced for bank deposits and for interbank lending. The problem, though, is that markets were again down. They have made a start. But a lot more remains. Gordon Brown took a giant leap forward. He is to be congratulated.

There was a recent column in the International Herald Tribune that featured him. To quote the column, "....the "commentariat," as Brown disdainfully refers to the chattering classes..." is the apparent total lack of regard Gordon Brown has for all the pundits running around today. Although I hope that the Prime Minister does not consider me part of this "crowd", I laughed and nearly fell off my chair when I saw this comment. It does show that there are leaders who think beyond polls and pundits. There are some of us who do advocate certain sensible alternatives and trust they would be listened to eventually. All of us must aim to make a difference by not staying silent and speak up. To do otherwise is a disservice to humanity. I

General Petraus & Victory

September 12th 2008 11:43
: ...Why am I not surprised?
General Petraus is now the new commander of US Central Command. There is no doubt that he has had the vision and the leadership to make a difference. The General that Senator McCain called one of America's greatest General has said that he will never declare victory in Iraq. This is directly contradictory to all the rhetoric and positioning coming out of the Adminstration. There is of course, Afghanistan. Afghanistan is now a concern. Now, with the war being spread to Pakistan, it shows no signs of slowing down. The problem is the useless Karzai. Afghanistan has also never been "conquered". The British could not do it during the hayday of Empire. The Russians could not do it. Now, NATO is trying to defy history. Hopefully, General Petraus knows something the rest of us don't. At least, I commend him for being a lot more realistic that his Commander in Chief, President Bush.
