Unhappy America
This week's Economist lead editorial was an America that is unhappy. In my reporting and commentary here, I have talked about it. Anyone who denies it, has his head in the sand. Phil Gramm, the former Senator from Texas, understood it to his detriment.
There is general consesus on what has gone wrong. Over 600 Billion Dollars has been spent on Iraq alone. The country continues to remain united in name only. As I have noted before, the "happy talk" that is pushed by the Adminstration is a ruse. The gains can fall apart at any time. The Healthcare system is in crisis. I remember John Kerry's admonition when he told the American People not to get sick. When you get sick, you might as well die. The country cannot spend 1.5 Trillion Dollars a year (almost 15% of its' gross domestic product) on healthcare while over 47 million people do not have healthcare. The old, tired argument of blaming healthcare on illegal immigrants is not going to wash either. Guantanamo will forever be one of those legacies of the Bush Adminstration for which he will be villified forever.
I will continue to be hopeful, though. Americans have the capability to think beyond the now. For a country that went through a revolution, a constitutional crisis, a civil war, world wars, a great depression, and of course 9/11. Americans have survived. Yes, America is truly feeling Blue. But, tomorrow is another day. The best is yet to come!!!!!
