The Presidential Look
When Senator Obama was traveling, the blogsphere and the punditry was abuzz about how Presidential Barack Obama was trying to look and feel. Of course, the new plane unveiled was quite impressive. This picture (courtesy of Jetphotos.Net) is quite impressive:
I think a Presidential Candidate has to travel in comfort. The only time a Presidential Candidate has to strategize and relax is pretty much during the time he is on the air. I think he needed to upgrade his traveling campaign and think that it will serve him well. As for this thing about being Presidential, I am not no sure. I want a President who understands what an awesome responsibility and committment it is to have the highest office the country can bestow on him. The symbols of the office and the way he acts must be in line with the expectations of the office. But I want someone to be humble and understanding, but tough. I don't particularly care about imagery. Everyone in the media is fascinated with imagery and symbolism. This is wrong as it can be. I want someone who speaks for me and who understands my problems. I don't want some one who thinks he speaks for me, while he is beholden for others who helped pay for his plane and his perks. I don't want someone who gets so enthralled with power that he or she forgets why he or she was elected in the first place.
As for the trip, the symbolism was everywhere. Whether in Berlin, in Jeruselam, Senator Obama did get to meet the key leaders. This was crucial. The fact that Al Maliki basically endorsed Senator Obama's plan was the first of a series of everything falling into place during the trip. There is of course his talk with that great showman, Nicholas Sarkozy. Check out the link courtesy of YouTube.
Now, as both candidates begin the fight anew now that Senator Obama is back, they will begin a substantive discussions on the future of the country. The back-and-forth nonsense going on "hopefully" will evolve into a genuine debate. We have to demand it nonetheless because the country and the world need that clarity of leadership.
