The Republican National Convention : Day 2
:
Is mistatements, character assasination and outright falsehoods going to carry the day????!!!???
The Republican National Convention is in full swing and just concluded its' second night. The theme and focus was on the hurricane. I was frankly sickened by how the Republicans took advantage of the hurricane. Despite whatever representations the Republicans may have made, the fact is that the Republicans took advantage of the hurricane and that SHOULD not be allowed. They did it and got mileage out of it. No matter what they tried to say, it left a very sour taste in my mouth. Senator McCain should have stayed away and simply made a declaration of support. He decided not to do it.
As always, there were speeches and music. Among the number of keynoters was Fred Thompson, the former Tennesse Senator and failed Presidential candidate. I became more and more agitated as he spoke. He had so many mistatements in his speech, it was not even funny. The only thing I will grant him is the fact that all of us salute John McCain for his service, sacrifice and courage for America. The humanity that led Senator and Mrs. McCain to adopt their daughter Bridget is beyond question. I salute them for it. It is what we stand for as a country. But, such traits does tnot mean that he is entitled to be crowned President. That is what Mr. Thompson asked us to do. There are those of us who love this country and try to serve our country and our communities as well. The implication that somehow our love of country and community is less is unfortunately frustruating--and Mr. Thompson told the country as such.
Senator Thompson claimed credit for the economic miracle of the 90's. He forgot to remind the country that there was a visionary leader called Bill Clinton who understood what needed to be done and did it. As he went out, he claimed that the Democratic Congress was the most incompetent Congress ever. What he failed to tell the country was that the Congress was in Republican hands since 2001. George W. Bush had the Congress and yet Government grew. Budget deficits got bigger. He also said (and I quote) that there were "smooth talkers and big talkers". Well, at least the Big Talker (and I am sure he was referring to Senator Biden) had achieved something during his years in Washington and never forgot where he came from. I wonder how in the name of deceny can this man look the country in the eye and make the claims that he made?
Joe Lieberman concluded the second day to create an atmosphere of bi-partisanship. I commend the junior senator from Conneticuit to be there to speak up for his friend. But, if I wanted to venture a guess, his appeal to the independents and Democrats will fall flat. But, this defense should not at the expense of questioniong others judgement, intergrity, patriotism and intentions. Senator Lieberman did that in my view and I was sorry to see that. Joe Lieberman noted that America's adversaries will "fear" John McCain. Well, what he failed to tell the country that Russia basically told the United States to go pound sand. Senator McCain (and President Bush) talked tough--but it was followed up by no action. But Russia is another matter which I will be writing about over the ensuing days and weeks. The so-called Bush 43 doctrine of preemption was condoned by Joe Lieberman. I wish Joe Lieberman would have noted that diplomacy is key and that force should be an absolute last resort.
I will be remise if I don't mention George W. Bush. He appeared via a video link from the White House. He said that John McCain is ready to lead. He is also entitled to his opinion. Let's see what tomorrow brings. It should be interesting.....
