The Iran Chronicles: 08/01/2009 Edition
:
Who do they think they're fooling?
The trial of some 100 people has begun in Iran:
They are accused of acting against National Security after the election and collaborating with "counter-revolutionary forces" I was trying to see where their lawyers were and trying to understand why this "show trial". When I saw the scenes and the way some of them looked, I guarantee they were tortured. I can almost guarantee that none of these guys have had access to lawyers. I was especially shocked to see how Mohammad Ali Abtahi appeared. He was one of Mr. Khatami's Vice Presidents and is himself considered an icon of the revolution. This is also true about others as well.
The regime's strategy is simple. They want to send a message to stop the protests. . This "show trial" is nothing but one. I was glad to see Muskharat, the leading reformist party headed by Former President Khatami's Brother, dismissed it as such. Mr. Khatami's brother was also detained during the first wave of unrest. The regime truly seems to think that they can again resort to the old tactics during the early days of the revolution. The people are not buying it anymore.
I have found it surprising that they have not touched Mousavi, Karoubi or for that matter, ex-President Khatami himself. If this happens, the very essence of the revolution will be brought into question. In the meantime, Idiotnejad made a speech in Mashad, Iran. He noted how he loves the Supreme Leader and how the relationship is like a father and son. Well, the father has given the son a gift. The Son is about to be again "confirmed" as President on Wednesday August 5.
The people have arisen, though. The fight with the regime is continuing though in subtle ways. I continue to be amused when I review the daily news from the regime's mouthpiece. It is a joke. As Idiotnejad's big day appraoches, I wanted to again revisit Mr. Mousavi's declarations of his vision for the country:
None of the questions were ever answered by Idiotnejad and his mentor. This is a bill of indictment that is quite compelling. The court of Public Opinion has already convicted idiotnejad and his mentor.
As I have seen the moves being made by the regime, the thirst for power seems to have truly overtaken the father and son. They seem to forget that the country is bigger than any one man. That's why America fascinates me.
