The Gaza Tragedy (The UN Debate)
:
When will it end?
The UN is right now in the midst of a debate in the UN Security Council. I just heard Mahmoud Abbas. I am also hearing the Israeli Ambassador.
The Israelis are again reminding the world of a a 8-Year Campaign of Terror. But, the question of the suffering of the people of Gaza is not being addressed. Israel is the occupying power and is responsible. One of the interesting things that the Israeli Ambassador noted that 540 trucks have been allowed to enter. Over the past 11 days, that is about 54 trucks a day. The UN reports I have seen notes that a minimum of 100 trucks is needed. The Ambassador also noted the clash of ideas. But, what she failed to understand that this action is destroying moderates and their stance on the street. Beyond the rhetoric on all sides, the fact that Tipzi Livni is not in New York speaks volumes. Tipzi Livni's absence shows the total disdain and lack of regard for International Law by the Israelis.
The Israeli Ambassador is right in one respect: the credibility of the Security Council is at stake. But, that remains with the Five Permanent Powers. Israel is asking whether Hamas will heed the words of the Security Council. Israel has not by virtue of the actions it has undertaken with its settlement activities. Israel is not taking responsbility for anything. There lies the hypocracy of it all.
As I hear the Israeli Ambassador speak, I sense that this conflict will continue. It will continue until the U.S. puts its foot down. In the meantime, the ordinary Gazans and Israeli soldiers continue to die as the world talks. Will the people heed Mahmoud Abbas' call to "let my people live"? I wonder.
