The Elections in Iran & The Stark Choices

Five Long Days!!!
The elections in Iran are in five days time. Starting Friday, millons of Iranians will go to the Polls on probably one of the most crucial elections since the revolution. As I have periodically visited Mr. Moussavi's Facebook page and his official website, I have been amazed as to how slick & professional the site is and the extent of the information available to all. I think they have taken a page out of Obama's Online Strategy.
I continue to be amazed ever more at how the entire machinery of the State has been geared to support idiotnejad. One has to look dig really deep to find coverage on the other candidates. This is also true of all the other State Media Organs--including Press TV. There is not even one picture of Mr. Moussavi on PressTV. IRNA, the Official Islamic Republic News Agency, featured him earlier on Sunday talking up his plans to clean up Football (Soccer). This is of course significant in light of the match Iran had with North Korea. Idiotnejad has also been talking up his threat to expose all who have been corrupt. Those who know and understand Iranian Society specifically think that he plans to name Mr. Rafsanjani's Sons, who play a significant role in Iran today. He has already named names. One of the people named has already challenged the incumbent President to a debate to clear his name.
As I have continued to assess the State of the Election during this final week, I especially found the Leader of the Revolution, Mr. Khameini's admonition to all to refrain from defaming each other to be laughable and pathetic. Mr. Khameini should have slapped his own candidate upside the head when he started going off on Mr. Moussavi's Wife--who is an accomplished intellectual in her own right. The performance of the debate clearly shows that the current incumbent is running scared when idiotnejad went after the man's wife. Where was Mr. Khameini then?
As election day approaches, It is clear that the political elite in today's Iran is split down the middle . From the polling data I am seeing, it appears that Mr. Moussavi is gaining ground . Whether that is enough to overcome the immense power of the State Appartus remains to be seen. The Lebanon vote may be a precusor, though. The March 14 coailtion prevailed. I also continue to believe that the Iranian People will surprise the world yet. The Islamic Republic seems to have quite a knack to somehow get itself a new lease of life. Even incremental change is better than what the country has been subjected to. Time will tell, though.
