The Earthquake in Iran: A Brief Update
:
..and now?
Iran suffered a major earthquake over the weekend. As I write this, the official death toll stands at 300 with over 2000 people injured. An estimated 16,000 people have been made homeless as a result
I find it very amusing how the Government has ordered reconstruction to begin immediately. The actual reports coming out of Iran reflect otherwise. It reflects a sense of shock and disbelief as the homeless continue to deal with the aftermath. Iran's Interior Minister Najar, though, underscored that the response has been 'excellent" and no further help was needed. Al Jazeera featured Gahnbar Naderi from Tehran that subtly undermined all that the Government was saying. I wonder whether his wings would be clipped or not.
I was gratified to see a statement from the White House and a commitment to help during this hour of need. Although Iran declared two days of national morning, I am not sure why The President had to leave for a meeting in Saudi Arabia as one of its' major provinces was dealing with the aftermath of a disaster. One has to ask: Why?
I'll be continuing comments on it as the aftermath of this calamity is assessed.
