Senator Obama's Speech On Iraq and Senator McCain's Response
Senator Obama spoke in Washington Today regarding the strategy in Iraq and reitrated his committment to end the war in Iraq. Senator McCain, according to his web, ripped the "timetable for defeat". Senator McCain just annouced his "comprehesnive" strategy for Afghanistan. Among his multitude of suggestions, he recommended three additional brigades to Afghanistan. He also said that the International Community must step up to help. He also said that the Afghan Government must be helped and the Army strengthened. In all his "happy talk" about Afghanistan, he neglects one important fact: the Afghan Government is corrupt. The state is pretty much a narco-state. Karzai is an inept, weak and corrupt man who can't even control his own capital. Yet, we want to somehow prop up this so-called President.
Senator McCain also notes that we are winning in Iraq and the surge is working. I wonder if he has read the works of folks like Nir Rosen, Juan Cole and others who note that Iraq is basically broken as a state. Nir Rosen, especially, notes that the killing has stopped because there is basically no one to kill. The Ethnic cleansing is pretty much complete. The multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society is no more. What is the definition of winning? I have not been able to find that answer just yet.....
