"Green Shots": Fact or Fiction

May 15th 2009 07:32
: Not as clear cut.....
As I have been assessing the state of the economy, I continue to be amazed at the "happy talk" going on. The happy talk is just happy talk.

This past week has seen Chrysler in bankrupcy. 789 Dealers will be shut down within the next thirty days. An average dealer employs around 30 people. That's over 21,000 people losing their jobs. GM is getting closer to bankrupcy. I have seen reports that they are accelerating payments to their suppliers. Walmart made money. But, their sales are down. Retail sales continue to slide. Unemployment continues to rise. Despite all the optimism and happy talk, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I did almost fall of my chair in laughter when I read the reaction of the German Economy Minister to the stress test the Treasury conducted on the big banks.

Making matters worst, France is now officially in recession after a 1.2 percent drop in gross domestic product in the first quarter of 2009. Navigating through the minefield will continue to be treacherous for a while yet. When will it all end? Not for a while......

: And???
The World
The G20 Class of 2009

The World's top 20 countries have desended upon London. London has braced itself for anarchy. Anyone who does not understand the anxiety felt by the people of the world seems to be living in fantasyland.

Behind all the smiles, there is serious work that leaders need to tackle. There is no way in the world that in one day, they would decide to solve the entire problems of the world. However, I view the comminque that is to be issued at the end of the summit as setting the tone of things to come.

As the deliberations continue, the suffering continues. Companies are laying off people. The U.S. Auto manufacturers just came out with their March sales numbers. The only word to explain it is terrible!!! The people continue to be as nervous as ever. In the State of California, there has been a marked drop in Sales Tax Revenue because people have cut back on their purchases. Sales Taxes help fund local government services. Some cities have seen drops as high as 30%. In addition, polls numbers indicate that there is a good chance that the revenue measures scheduled to go before the voters on May 19 will fail --triggering a doomsday scenario of further cuts across all fronts.

It is extremely tough to be optimistic as I continue to assess the state of our world. The choice are stark and the road ahead is not easy. What other choice do we have?

: Quite Disturbing......
After a concerted campaign, the EU agreed to remove the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran (PMOI) from its list of banned terror organizations. The PMO and its' umbrella organization, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, are fighting the Islamic Republic. They are right now based on Iraq. Iraq has told them they have to leave. I am sure that they will dissipate into Europe now that they are no longer regarded as a terrorist organization.

The PMOI pushed the fiction that it was put on the list to appears the Islamic Republic. Now, what the PMOI fails to understand is that it took up arms against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. It conducted terror campaings. It created a cult-like culture in its' little enclave called Ashraf outside Baghad and was supported by Saddam Hussein for years. It "claims" that it wants democracy for Iran. It aims to "determine" through the appointment of the PMOI leader's wife, Maryam, the direction for the country. The people seem not to matter

: Infotainment at its' best
Silvio the clown (aka the Prime Minister of Italy) was in Russia. According to a report in the Times of London, the clown said that, ".... Russia and America can do business together.." He went on to say that, "...I will try to help relations between Russia and the United States, where a new generation has come to power. I don't see problems for Medvedev in establishing good relations with Obama, who is also handsome, young and suntanned".
According to the report, he said that he had intended the remark as a compliment and those who failed to understand this were "imbeciles". The clown is the imbecile. He is the idiot. I am sorry that President-Elect Obama has to deal with such a fool.

Hugo Chavez & The Russians

September 7th 2008 06:08
: "The Meglomaniac...:"
Venezuela has announced that it wants to hold joint naval exercises with Russia in November. The only thing is a thumb at the United States, pure and simple. I find him to be funny and a bit of a buffon.

He wants to be create the 21st Century version of a socialist utopia. What I am seeing does not make me comfortable. Venezuela has underwritten Cuba to a large extent. It has been the primary supporter of Argentina by extending a financial lifeline to Nestor Kirchner in Argentina. This is quite a move, though. I wonder what the response of the Adminstration is going to be. This is so in light of the fact that Dick Cheney just got down with his visits to Ukraine and Georgia. Russians will not back down. The U.S. is stretched too thin right now. John McCain and Barack Obama should come out forcefully against such action. What is Chavez afraid of

: The question is do they deserve another 4 years?
The Final Day of the Republican Convention is drawing to a close. Just like the Democratic Convention, it had its share of music, speeches and cheerleading yet again. The attack dogs were at it, though. The most notable one was Lindsay Graham. I respect Senator Graham for some of the principled stance he has taken. For instance, he bucked his party on Social Security. He bucked his party when he joined the so-called gang of 14 to help broker the compromise on filibusters. He has also served in Iraq because he was a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. But, his attacks on Senator Obama were in my view, simply sad. It was also pathetic because his message was that because Senator Obama opposed to war, his conduct was tantamount to treason.

Cindy McCain's eloquence was commendable in defense of her husband. I commend the able and eloquent writers who supported her in this endeavor. Cindy and John have been a hell of a team and I have written about both of them. Their commitment to America is absolute and their humanity should never be questioned. Senator McCain reminded us to get involved to help change Government. In this regard, he is absolutely right. He also paid homage to Senator Obama. As I listened to him, I also believed that we are indeed here to serve a cause better than ourselves. I have tried to do that as well and by the grace of the Lord, will continue to do so. Senator McCain also told us that "...Americans want us to stop yelling at each other..." and told the country that the Republicans will get back to the basics of the belief that has driven the Republicans. He implored all to fight for all that there is important

Russia: What a sad state of affairs?

August 31st 2008 19:29
: ...and Putin a Democrat...what a joke!!!
Russia has broken the back of Georgia. It has also continued its' process of a idiotic concept it has coined called "managed democracy." Al Jazeera has just reported that another prominent Russian journalist, Yevloyev, has been shot while in police custody. He has been a prominent Kremlin critque of Russian policy. Russia is run by the same gang whom President Bush said that could be trusted. The gangster running Chechnya, Kadyrov, is one of them. As I see Russia, I am reminded of the American Wild West. There seems to be no stopping them, right now.

What is the solution? it is to pull the rug from under them by stopping the reliance on the means that sustains them: Oil & Gas. If Russia does not have the oil income, it has nothing. It will need to figure out how to behave like a responsible member of the international community. The challenge for us is to have the will to do so.

Russia vs. The World

August 27th 2008 17:32
: Being Wise is a Gift!!!
It is Russia vs. the World. Russia has arisen and there is no stopping them. I continue to have a problem with what the President of Georgia did. I read this statement by Carl Bildt, The Swedish Foreign Minister, when he said "...when you have a choice between doing something stupid and doing nothing, it is better to do nothing...". I am sorry to say this, but the President of Georgia did something stupid and the world is paying the price for it. If our current world leaders think that Russia is going to blink, my response to that is No way!!! All this tough by Senator McCain is simply hollow. My fear is that the U.N. will once again lose its' legimitacy because of the disregard shown by all parties. The U.N. Security Council could not even agree on a Security Council President statement.

The Russians have already achieved their purpose and all the world has done is to huff and puff

: Why is the world surprised?
Russia just did what the world did not want it to do. It has recognized Georgia's breakway regions. The Russian Bear has come back roaring stronger than ever. I have said this once and will say it again; The responsibility lies with the Georgian President. He should not have taken the bait the South Ossetians laid out for him. Did he win the propaganda war? I suppose. But, Russians do not care. Why the United States is surprised is something that I am confused about. Furthermore, Al Jazeera is reporting right now that Russians may table a resolution condemning the civilian Afghan casualities. So, Russia will not stay silent. It is one of the new realities that the West must deal with. Right now, The Russian U.N. Ambassador is making a statement regarding the justification for the recognition. He is reporting on the timeline that ultimately led to this step. I do agree with the Russian Ambassador in that the Georgian President was the one who undertook this to his detriment. But, The Russians talking about Democracy is also just as idiotic and stupid.

It's now Official: It is Biden!!!!

August 23rd 2008 05:50
: Hell of a Choice....
Well, the word is out. Everybody is talking about it....Barack Obama has chosen Senator Biden as his running mate. When Biden said, "...I am not the guy..." I sure was fooled!!!

This decision and the way the process was run shows the discipline that the Obama Campaign has run its' affairs. Although I was hoping to be one of the "privileged" to have received the text message first, I am still happy. In Senator Biden, Senator Obama gets someone who understands the world, is experienced and will be a tough and effective advocate for the Democratic Party. This is a very strong and reasoned choice. I am just afraid that this may be a repeat of 1988. Remember Dukakis-Bensten? I am old enough to remember that election. But, Obama is no Dukakis. He is a lot more disciplined, has a greater sense of history and understands what not to do. In Senator Biden, he gets a seasoned pro who knows and understands what needs to be done. He was right on Putin, he was right on Iraq, he was right on Bork. So what that he chose a passage from Neil Kinnock? Despite being in the Senate for 35 years, he never bought a home in DC. He has been a fighter. This combination will be tough to beat

Senator McCain & Big Oil

August 20th 2008 00:36
: Who is he trying to fool?
Senator McCain visited a Oil Rig Tuesday. I am sure he had a great time. During the visit, he criticized Senator Obama for not supporting offshore oil drilling. The argument is so idiotic, it is not even funny. Senator McCain did note that he wanted to after everything to transform energy. But, the relentless push for offshore oil drilling continues unabatted. The conservatives are continuing their push. Newt Gingrich just sent out a commentary (distributed through Human Events) blasting the stance of those who are opposed. The problem is that the idea that somehow offshore oil drilling is going to help solve our long-term energy need is simply foolish, idiotic and beyond reason. There may be oil out there or they may not. Do we want to take the risk to the environment for a potential short term gain? I wonder.

As I reflected upon today's Senator McCain Photo Op, I thought as to what exactly the oil companies are truly thinking. They are breaking all kinds of profit recrods. But, they have to figure out a way to transform their businesses to avoid the predicament of becoming irrelevant. If what is going on in Venezuela and Russia is any indication, they have to see the writing on the wall. They ought to simply go beyond slogans and truly working to transform their companies. The question is will they have the courage to do it? Will our political leaders have the courage to force them to do it

Russia (Cont'd).....

August 17th 2008 03:22
: Russia ain't going away folks...live with it....
The Russians are continuing to do their thing. According to reports I have seen, they are still in Georgia moving around with impunity. Medvedev signed the seize fire document drawn up by the French. Yet, it is just a piece of paper only. Beyond that, there is the matter of the agreement Poland and the U.S. signed on the hosting of the missile defense shield. Colonel General Anatoly Ngovistyn, the deputy chief of staff of the Russian Armed Forces, basically put Poland on notice that it might expose itself to attack. This will trigger a NATO response, since Poland is part of NATO and is not Georgia. This threat should be taken seriously. On top of what is continuing on in Georgia, the United States is going to be hamstrung in its' response. This conflict in Georgia was mentioned in the Saddleback Civil Forum as an example of the challenges the United States faces. Senator McCain said that he would know how to response. I am still trying to figure out what that response would entail.

: Maybe Rick Warren Will Try and Talk Some Sense....
By now, I am sure everyone has heard about the upcoming get-together Barack Obama and John McCain have got planned for August 16. For those who are interested, the details are available at Really Long Link It is also going to be broadcast live on CNN, as well as streamed over the internet.

I view this get-together as significant. First of all, it will in a forum moderated by a very interesting man. Rick Warren, Saddleback's Senior Pastor, started this church from virtually nothing a little over 25 years ago. I remember the time when the campus Saddleback Church is now was being built and how it evolved. I view his message of love and compassion as refreshing. He is truly one purpose driven man that should be listened to. I have also been quite taken by his humility in spite of his power and that in and of itself makes him credible in this increasingly cynical world that we live in
