OV Earth Watch: Second In a Series

: It Starts w/Us
As the world gears up to celebrate Earth Day, I wanted to cotninue thinking about the possiblities that each individual can have to help make a difference every day. There are sceptics continuing to pounce upon oversights by the UN climate body, the IPCC. But if anyone denies that the earth's climate is changing and that the power does exist to help change things, they are delusional and do not accept the truth.

There are a number of resources that I have ran across that folks on "main street" can go out and check out: 1) letmeplay.com: This is a site dedicated to recycling Sneakers; 2) carpetrecovery.org (old carpets); 3) patagonia.com (clothes). These are just three such sites that all of us can check out and see what can be done to help do what is right for our planet.

Whatever is done in "main street" can only go so far. There has to be a continued International effort to go green. Even though I regard Copenhagen as a disappointment, at least the effort to insure that the World understands that Climate Change is a reality will be in the focus. The world, in the meantime, is moving on. China is spending 217 Billion Dollars on Green Tech and is taking the leading role in it. Denmark's Vestas continues to be the leading Wind Power Technology in the World. BYD, the Chinese Company in which Warren Buffet has a stake, has 10,000 Engineers working on things like more affordable batteries. This is as America has pretty much done away with its Auto Industry.

The World should take the lessons learnt from Denmark and gradually break away from fossil fuels. There are, of course, alternatives that are being studied. They included ag-fuels and waste-to-fuel which are interesting technologies to observe and talk about. There is of course the plug-in hybrid vehicles technology. Each of these has its drawbacks. But the moves are being made--and not a moment too soon.

Such research should be encouraged in a major way. I am certain that at the highest level of the U.S. Government, this is being discussed especially in light of the continued defense committments by the United States around the world. In order to create a long-term sustainable economic model, we have to really overcome the traditional way of thinking. Others around the world are doing it and doing it in a major way. The Oil Companies have to probably be forced into this kicking and screaming. I, for one, am not shedding a tear for them because they are in a business that is declining.

America should have the courage to do what is right. The world is not waiting anymore. I have to truly wonder whether the world will drive away from truly committing suicide. The signs are there if that consesus and committment is not at hand. There needs to be in order to preserve what makes this unique creation so wonderful to write about and talk about. When I read about the 8 million unique species of life in Madagascar, I have to do what I can in order to drive this debate to a higher level and avoid all the noise.

The debate goes on, because the future belongs to those who dare and who work to make a difference every day. The "fierce urgency of now" is ever more because of the world's need for Food Security and Water Security. Our future depends on it.

Honestly, we didn't cause the current "climate change" any more than dinosaurs did. Clearly, you have never studied geology or paleontology or dendrochronology, or you would know that the climate has changed repeatedly since the dawn of creation. If you're desperate for a "crisis" to cling to and base your life around, why not try something that's at least real and can be changed by humans? Terrorism, for example... or the socialism that is threatening our way of life... or maybe the economy that idiotic politicians have abused almost to death. THOSE are real and can be changed without new taxes and regulations that have to come from Washington DC.

S.L,
You seem to be an expert in everything. The difference between you and I is that I am of the view that the more I know, the more I know I don't know. You need to get off this nonsense about Socialism crap and stop drinking the cool-aid that provocators like Beck, Hannity and the rest of them seem to be feeding you all.
If you read my write-up, I noted that it starts with us. Government can't solve all the problems. Not withstanding what you think of bill clinton, he made sure that the country understood it. The problem I have with your vision is that in your world, the state has no role. If that is the case, then the people of New Orleans should have been left to fend for themselves. What would you say to the President of the Maldives as his nation is threatened to go under? What would you say to 30 Million Bangeldashis who will be dislocated as a result of the changes going on?
We have the technology to transform the way we live. What's wrong with that..what's wrong with being able to do things different? If anyone is manfucaturing a crisis, it is those who lie, mislead, misrepresent and misconstrue....whether it is death panels, socialism and the rest of the nonsense that is coming out of the so-called conservatives who seem to only have one agenda in mind: Power..and rest be damned.

Lying, misleading, misrepresenting, and misconstruing are what made glo-bull warming/cooling/climate change/ whatever millions for criminals like Gore and all the jokers who received huge grants to falsify their studies, Mike. It's already been proven.

As for using technology to cope with reality. It's a great idea! We build houses to keep the weather out. We use fertilizer to make crops grow better. New inventions have improved the quality of life all through human history.

New Orleans wasn't the only place damaged by Katrina. But their pathetic mismanagement (both then and now) have created an ongoing disaster. Other towns have recovered and moved on with the business of living. Gov. Kathy Brown, Mary Landrieu and Ray Nagin should have been prosecuted for all the damage and removed from office permanently instead of being allowed to continue being wasteful idiots.

As for the "health care" garbage and death panels, you can't be serious, Mike! Are you completely unaware of how things are in countries that have government paid health care? Bureaucrats literally decide who lives and who doesn't, based on the cost-effectiveness of providing medical treatment. Even your hero, B.O. (B.S.) admitted publicly that it might be better to offer pain pills than life-saving surgery for those already sick or elderly. He even seemed proud of being able to offer "end of life counseling" to patients, so they could choose how and when to die. But you go ahead and pretend those ideas don't exist or don't qualify as death panels if it makes you happy. Until you or someone you care about becomes the victim.

Oh, government has a role, Mike. It's very carefully delineated in the Constitution. Our government was NOT designed to create a welfare state or pay for the support of the rest of the world. That's what charities are for. Now, with fewer tax breaks for charitable giving, the government will have the excuse of "being forced" to take more tax money and give it away. The American people are the most generous givers in the world, but once the government has all our money, we won't be able to live, much less give.

One last point. Do you deny that Castro, Marx, and Mao are examples of socialism? Their communist ways should be well known, even to liberals with their heads firmly stuck in the sand... Perhaps you weren't aware of the impressive number of White House advisers and politicians who think Castro, Mao and Marx were heroes "of the people". How could you possibly have missed that detail? Maybe you should try some real news, instead of liberal drek from the former mainstream media...

Thank you for your comments.

The short answer to your question about healthcare in other cconcerns is a resounding yes. You are the one who has to actually listen to David Cameron, the leader of British Conservatives, on the National Health Service. I actually take the time to read what is going on around the world..not merely take what Fox Noise happens to say about what is going on in the world.

You're also entitled about your view of the US constitution. I again go back to what I have written about before. In your world, there should not be clean water, buildings codes to protect against earthquakes should be non-existent, fire safety should be left to people, etc etc etc. You all need to actually go read and understand the Constitution...

As for New Orleans specifically, Kahtleen Blanco was inept...no question about it...I am not so sure about your assertion about Mary Landrieu...But that's for the voters of Louisiana and Kathleen Blanco walked away from it. Bobby Jindhal, who wants to be President, is a smart guy. But the hypocricy of his actions about volcanos and how he took credit for the stimulus after opposing it is simply laughable.

Last point: I submit to you that Socialism and rationing already is in effect in America when the insurance cartel can decide what is covered, what is not covered, that there is a lifetime cap, that if you have a pre-existing condition you might as well drop dead...that's the true reality!!

We have to think different. Doing more of the same does disservice to our children and grand children. We have to go "beyond the now" in our discourse.

Thanks again for your visits and your interest. I appreciate it and thank you for the dialogue.
