Khameini: The Decider

Iran's Supreme Leader responded to President Obama's overture. Iran's Supreme Leader is the ultimate decider of all state matters in Iran. The Supreme Leader went to Mashad in Eastern Iran on the first day of the Iranian New Year to talk about this and other matters.

I had a chance to listen to the Supreme Leaders's New Years Message. I found his new year's message to be actually quite reasonable. I think he was a little off base on his analysis of the impact of the economic winter on Iran today. I was trying to assess the impact of the response

I found the final touch to be quite deft when he ended his message with the standard Persian Greeting of Happy New Year (Eid Shoma Mobarak). But, I was frankly disappointed about the initial reaction that Ayatollah Khameini had when he spoke in Mashad. He noted that The United States had to change its attitude. But, I think a reconciliation has to happen. The United States needs Iran in order to be able to insure a reasonable sense of stability in Iraq, assist with Afghanistan and yes even Pakistan. Iran has an interest in this becaue of Kurdistan in the West, the continued calamity in Afghanistan and Iran's continued lawless Baluchestan Province--which borders Pakistan.

Reconciliation will happen. It is only a matter of time.
