: What can be done?
The World continues to be patient as Iran continues to play around. Iran was given a deadline until this past Friday to agree to a draft resolution that the IAEA did in order to help break the logjam on the Uranimum enrichment issue. The Iranian Regime missed and said that they would get to them next week. Furthermore, France's role in this enrichment process was rejected becasue the Iranians don't like the French. Not withstanding Nicholas Sarzkosy's Domestic grandstanding, he has told the truth about Iran and Ahmadinejad. The Iranian Regime has a tough time accepting that.

As this comedy side show continues, there is the continued psychological war against the opposition. What the regime's thugs did to Karoubi is just sad:

It was preplanned and premedidated. The nervousness of the regime is very much in evidence because of how they attacked this man. . I found it quite strange that despite the public committment not to mention the names of opposition leaders, they still are named and maligned for being anti-revolutionary.

I welcome the continued advocacy by leading media personalities like Fareed Zakaria who closed his weekly CNN program with an eloquent call for all journalists jailed in Iran to be freed. I wonder if they would. The World has to stand united. I wonder if they have the courage to "Dare to be Great"!!!

: What will the future hold?
Jundullah Hiding out in Pakistan

There is never a dull moment in Iran. I was gratified to see that Maziar Bahai, the Newsweek Correspodent, was released on 300,000 Dollar bail. However, I was shocked when I reviewed the reports on the death of Six Top Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders in the South of the country as reported by Al Jazeera earlier:

This assassination of the top commanders occured during a supposed Security & Reconiliation summit. The suicide bombers breached security, understood the schedule and pulled off the daring attack. The Government told the world that they had destroyed the Jundullah who claimed responsbility for this horrific attack. Jundullah is an organization that is supposedly agitates for a separate Baluchestan in Southern Iran. But, this is an organization that is also involved in drug trafficking and kidnapping. I regard this organization as the Middle East's version of the FARC in Columbia.

As with the FARC in Columiba, the Jundullah has to be dealt with harshly. Despite all the reservations about the Government, the election and the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards in insuring a defacto Military Dictatorship, the need to be able to deal with such rotten is ever more vital. Iranian officials have been coming out implying that Jundullah has been supported by the U.S. and Britain. Iranian officials need to be able to stay focused on defeating this menance and not blame foreign powers. But, Iran has to also insure that Pakistan is held to account over a lawless border area that has caused this carnage to take place. I do not believe that Pakistan has what it takes despite their efforts in flushing out the Taliban right now.

Not withstanding this profound challenge, the fight against the opposition in Iran continues. It is frankly amusing. I saw reports of a rift being reported between Mir Hossein Mosavi and his wife, Zahra Rahnavard. I also have seen a concerted campaigin to go after Karoubi and bring him before a Special Court for the Clergy in the Country. The Judiciary has already dismissed Karoubi's charges of rape in the prisons as fabricated. But, there was bit of interesting news. As Ex-President Khatami celebrated his 66th Birthday, I continued to be gratified by the statement put out by both Mr. Khatami and Mr. Mousavi that the campaign to change and reform the country will go on. I continue to be amazed as to the fact that the regime has not dared to go after either Mr. Mousavi or Mr. Khatami directly.

As the political and security challenges go on, there is the problem of the economy. Direct subsidies for fuel, bread, etc. are being elminiated in favor of targeted cash subsidies. With high unemployment, high inflation and an apparent budget deficit, the Government had to do something to somehow sort out Public Finances. I wonder what the people's reactions is going to be, though?

The struggle for the soul of Iran continues.

: And?
Quite a Cast of Characters

The incumbent President has been on a roll. Throughout the past two days alone, he has hosted a summit on Afghanistan with the The Presidents of Afghanistan and Pakistan, has had two news conferences and has been busy on the campaign trail. : ..and now the real work begins......
History.....
A New Dawn Has Arrived

Barack Hussein Obama is now the 44th President of the United States. Throughout my lifetime, I have had the privilege to read on the traditions and was finally able to be a true witness to this momentous transfer of power due to the power of technology. I have continued to marvel at how someone with so much power gives it up so willingly because the people are truly sovereign in America. This was quite moving when the President and the First Lady escorted Former Mr. and Mrs. Bush
