Iran....Things to Watch For & Reflect Upon....
Newsweek Magazine, in its' most recent edition, discussed some of the candidates for teh Presidency to go against Ahmadinejad. Well, Ahmadinejad is merely a clerk. Of course, he has shared with us that he has had visions and truly believes what he says. Now, the candidates vying to replace him seem to be a bit more sensible. By sensible, I mean sensible in a sense that they are acceptable to the regime supremos who will ultimately decide who will return. Please learn the following names: 1) Larijani: The present speaker of the majlis; 2) Haddad Adel: The former Speaker of the majlis and son in law of the supreme leader (who is the only power in Iran); 3) Karoubi: Another Former Speaker who is a reformer: 4) Khatami: the former President; 5) Bager-Ghalibaf: the Mayor of Tehran. Remember, Ahmadinejad was a former mayor of Tehran when he ran. I will writing and reporting on this more over the ensuing months.
Now, there is of course the 100-pound gorrilla in the room, the Iranian Armed Forces. The power vests in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp. The key division handling overseas acitivity is the elite Quds Force, currently commanded by Qassem Soleimani. David Ignatius of the Washington Post recently had a feature article about him. General Soleimani's decisive role in lowering the tension in Iraq when the Sadrists began their revolt was especially interesting. I think Iran would want a stable Iraq and get the Americans out quickly and to insure that the Iraqi Government is on its' feet. It will be interesting to watch and observe.
