The Gaza Tragedy (Day 11)

January 6th 2009 05:06
: When will it all end?
The War in Gaza is entering its 11th Day. The U.N. is impotent, the Arabs are silent and the Israelis are continued their war on 1.5 Million People. It appears that Nicholas Sarkozy's magic touch has not made a difference, either. Israel continues to attack and bomb civilans with no end in sight. The Israeli lack of regard for World Opinion is mind boggling.

The official U.S. stance is that Hamas is to blame. While women and children are dying, the world is staying silent and Israel continues to attack. No matter what Israel says, the simple fact is that Gaza is the world's biggest prison. As I have commented throughout this war, Israel continues the land, the sea and the air. Israel says it left Gaza in 2005. But, it truly never left. It has continued to block vital supplies. The Gazans have no where to go. Yet, Israel continues to portray itself as the victim. The West Bank is not much better, either. Between the Wall, the checkpoints and the settlements, Israel has done whatever it wants without any regard for the international community.

As I have assessed the official U.S. Government response, I was especially taken aback by Dick Cheney's comments. In my view, the man lied yet again when he noted that Israel did not inform the U.S. before it launched the attack. Israel does not make a major move without consulting the United States. I also think that Mubarak probably was given a hint of what was to come. It is true that Hamas is not a UN member-state. But this is war no matter what spin the Israeli Government or U.S supporters say it is.

I view the stance by Hamas as nothing short of simply pathetic, though. The idea of resistance is understandable when people are under occupation. But, the idea of somehow thinking that Hamas would do what Hizbollah did was a profound strategic error for which Palestinian women and children are paying a very heavy price for it.

What continues to bothersome is the silence of the Arab Governments. Mere words will simply not do. Arabs were silent during Lebanon and continue to be silent now because they have no regard for Hamas. What must be realized is that Hamas cannot be bombed back to the stone age. It is a state of mind and a culture of resistance that will be ever more radicalized as this War continues.

NBC News had this earlier on the humanitarian toll on Gaza:

Al Jazeera continues to report on the plight of families desparate to save their loved ones. Not even UN institutions have been spared. The United Nations is telling the world that the world is faced with a humanitarian catasphore. As for the United States, it cannot sit silent and expect to retain the crediblity it needs to have in order to help broker a lasting peace. U.S. Policy has to reflect the broad regional implications and not be Israeli-Centric. Alistair Crook, the Middle East Expert, noted how this tragedy is Barack Obama's Bay of Pigs. I tend to agree.

What I worry about is Post traumatic Stress Order in the victims. What I also worry about is the increased radicalization of the Palestinians. I see no winners at all, only losers.

: Everyone needs to calm down....
I have been reading through all the controversy surrounding the invitation by President-Elect Obama to speak at the Inauguration. Here is the President-Elect's news conference on Thursday when he spoke on this subject:

I admit I am a bit prejudiced on this subject. When I was looking for work, one of the places I turned to was Saddleback Church. They accepted me even though I was not a member of the church. They did not even ask. They accepted me with open arms. I remember when the campus where Saddleback now sits in Lake Forest, California as it was being built. It has grown to four vibrant campuses. Pastor Warren has been a voice of reason within the Evangelical Community. We have to give the man a chance to speak to how the nation should be brought together. I visited their site to understand their philosophy and what they said about their belief in Man is a testament to their views on this:

ABOUT MAN

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. He is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward what God called "sin." This attitude separates man from God.
Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2

They have adhered to their beliefs and I am an example of it. I was very sorry to see the debate the way it has been run. I think the President-Elect's committment to elevate the rights of Gays and Lesbians is ironclad. Their rights must be protected just like everyone else. On that, there shall be no doubt. Even Pastor Warren himself addressed this during an interview with Ann Curry of NBC News. I also vehemently disagree with Rachel Maddow when she said that Obama made a mistake. I think Obama made a move that was bold and in line with his committment to govern from the center, get things done and bring the country together. We have no time for ideology and bitterness. We have to figure out how to go beyond this kind of divisive debate.

Barack Obama needs to be the President for All Americans. Americans have to remember that they are Americans first. They may be Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Black, White, Asian, etc. I regard this invitation in that spirit and bold. Obama is a man who brought it a team of rivals to help steer us away from the edge of the abyss. I commend President-Elect Obama for having kept his cool during some of the more difficult periods of the election. There is no way that he would lose his nerve now. There is too much at stake.

Jesse Jackson Jr....

December 11th 2008 02:05
: Another disppointment....
Jesse Jackson Jr. is the son of Rev. Jackson who has been a fixture in the Civil Rights movement fo a long time. He represents the South Side of Chicago in Congress. He served as a Co-Chair of Barack Obama's campaign. He is in hot water over being involved in the madman who wanted to sell the Senate Seat. Based on what I have seen so far, the Illinois Governor has gone mad. He let power get to his head. Any sensible guy would have just resigned. Elliot Spitzer took three days. But he resigned for the sake of his family But, why did Jesse Jackson Jr. allow himself to get into this mess is beyond me. I think his father's experience should serve as a reasonable indication of not getting himself in trouble.

Our Economic Tsunami (Cont'd)

November 30th 2008 16:29
: Will things be the same?
The Economic Tsunami that has engulfed the U.S. and the world seems to have no end in sight. The Chinese President came out to warn about the expected challenges. Here in the U.S., I went out to assess how things were during Black Friday. Many were out, but I found shoppers not to be as keen as years past. People were out looking for bargains. For instance, I saw a 42" Flat Screen for $ 700. The retailers are truly desparate. The desparation shows because the numbers I saw being reported showed a 3% rise. It is a 5% decrease from last year. The more disturbing fact is that there had to be deep discounting to lure shoppers in. I see them being in the Red quite a bit longer.

I was thinking about the future of retailing. I see a very, very bleak future for retailing because the distinction is becoming less and less. When people start competing on price only, all bets are off. I see the following retailers standing after the storm: Walmart, Target, BestBuy & Kohls. On the high end, I see Macys and Nordstroms surviving right now. I also see players like Ross, Steinmart & Loehmans surviving as well because of the interesting niche they have developed. Beyond that, I don't see a place for players like Sears, Penney's Dillard and bloomingdales. What we are seeing in Retail is going to cause some profound challenges for mall operators such as Simon in the U.S. Some of niche players who have high debt will also go by the wayside as well

Gaza......

November 28th 2008 07:00
: The Coverage Has Fallen off the Face of the Earth....
Gaza continues to be under siege by the Israelis. Israel has initiated the blockade with the support of Egypt because of the security threat from Hamas. Some have said that Gaza is the world's largest prison. I am truly trying to see and think through a solution that all can live with. Whatever ideas folks have had has only resulted in misery for all. Israelis have to continue to live in fear. Palestianians continue to suffer because they cannot simply have the basic necessities that is necessary. Israel pulled out of Gaza. But, it continues to control the Air, the Sea and Land borders of Gaza. I am sure Israel understands its' obligations. But somehow the suffering of the ordinary Palestianian that is neither a member of Hamas or any the families should never be forgotten. From what I have seen, it is in fact the case.

The plight of the Palestinians was discussed in this film showcased in Toronto last month

: What a Fascinating Character....
I have been fascinated by Louis Farakhan. The Nation of Islam Leader sure has had his share of controversy over the years. I briefly commented on his sermon to his congregation this past Sunday. I found him to be reasoned and reminding his congregation of the need to make sure that African Americans do their part to overcome. He was not angry. He also was not angry when he talked to Ritz Khan. Maybe his bout with cancer changed him. Maybe, the election of Barack Obama changed him. Maybe he wants to leave a legacy that overcomes all the misconceptions he has had. Here is the interview (courtesy of Al Jazeera):

: Infotainment at its' best
Silvio the clown (aka the Prime Minister of Italy) was in Russia. According to a report in the Times of London, the clown said that, ".... Russia and America can do business together.." He went on to say that, "...I will try to help relations between Russia and the United States, where a new generation has come to power. I don't see problems for Medvedev in establishing good relations with Obama, who is also handsome, young and suntanned".
According to the report, he said that he had intended the remark as a compliment and those who failed to understand this were "imbeciles". The clown is the imbecile. He is the idiot. I am sorry that President-Elect Obama has to deal with such a fool.

General Powell is now on the record

October 19th 2008 16:51
: Quite an indicement of the Republican Party
General Powell went on the record earlier on U.S. National Television. He has endorsed Barack Obama for President. I found his near repudiation of the right-wing shift of the Republican Party especially pointed. Senator McCain's judgement was the key question, as I saw it. As I listened to General Powell, what especially drove me was how General Powell addressed the question on Muslims on in America:

What Future Should We Hope For?

August 20th 2008 22:07
: A little humor will never hurt.....
Campaigns are serious business. Campaigns are a chance to debate and reflect upon the future. As I was reviewing my daily analysis, I thought some humor was in order. Senator McCain's visit to the oil rig prompted a response from the Democrats. I I have commented on the idiocy of this push by Senator McCain. I did get a kick out of the ad,though:

: An Interesting Discourse
The wide ranging discussions Pastor Warren and Senator McCain had continued on. One of the questions I felt was poignant. Pastor Warren noted that leaders are not stubborn and do change their minds. He then asked Senator McCain about a decision he had made and then changed his mind. He was quick to respond: Off Shore Drilling. He went on to note that we must attack the problem of energy on all fronts now. He reminded all of us that the United States is sending out 700 billion dollars a year to folks who are not at times that friendly and cooperative. Senator McCain's plan is dubbed the "Lexington Plan" and is available on his website. Leaders should be flexible and change their mind, while not forgetting their principles. George W. Bush seems to have understood that during the last months of his Presidency.

His response to the question of Abortion was to the point and without any reservations. His view is that abortion begins at the moment of conception. He told the world that he was going to be a Pro-Life President. As for marriage, Senator McCain was also adamant that it was a union between a man and a woman. Although an avowed Federalist, Senator McCain noted that he would back a marriage amendment if the States moved to force other states to accept their marriages. Evil must be defeated and the Senator brought up Osama Bin Laden. He committed to hunting him down. Osama is evil and evil indeed must be eradicated. I think his commitment is a bit over the top due to the realities on the ground in Pakistan and Afghanistan

: Maybe Rick Warren Will Try and Talk Some Sense....
By now, I am sure everyone has heard about the upcoming get-together Barack Obama and John McCain have got planned for August 16. For those who are interested, the details are available at Really Long Link It is also going to be broadcast live on CNN, as well as streamed over the internet.

I view this get-together as significant. First of all, it will in a forum moderated by a very interesting man. Rick Warren, Saddleback's Senior Pastor, started this church from virtually nothing a little over 25 years ago. I remember the time when the campus Saddleback Church is now was being built and how it evolved. I view his message of love and compassion as refreshing. He is truly one purpose driven man that should be listened to. I have also been quite taken by his humility in spite of his power and that in and of itself makes him credible in this increasingly cynical world that we live in
