The Gulf of Mexico Tragedy (Cont'd)

Focusing on What's Important...
The Gulf of Mexico is Dying. This clip from MSNBC is telling in many respects:
Although I appreciate the President noting that he wants to find out who to kick, the Ecosystem is dying and trying to figure out how to restore what has been destroyed is going to take a very long time. BP is trying to make itself look good. I actually did some of the very research while hosting a session in internet research for some of my students and realized how they have worked to manipulate the Google and Bing search engines. Whatever the publicity campaign they are working on will not have any buyers. Even the apologists for the Oil Industry in Congress and the States will make sure that they won't touch anything with the name "BP" on it becuase of how toxic it is. What is even more disturbing is that this may go on through the Fall because of the advent of the Hurricane Season.
The debate over the Environment and its impact will be felt for years to come. It is the immediate political issues that will continue to be the focus of the so-called "talking heads". The Conservative Community will continue to push through the notion that it was all President Obama's fault. There is of course what Mark Mardell talked about in a recent edition of the Mardell's America. It is a blog that he writes about in BBC News. He notes that Bobby Jindhal may well be a winner in this whole thing. His state lives and dies with the Oil Industry. He is one of those guys that has a vested interest in continuing on with the way things are. But, at least he seems to understand that the people need help. How that reconciles with his view that Government is the problem is of concern to me. There will be people who will emerge with reputations either intact or enhanced. One guy who is truly working through it is David Vitter. He was walking side by side with President Obama on Friday during his visit and is at the forefront of fighting for wildlife.
What continues to be of concern to me is the fact that there has to be a stop to this political posturing on the right and the left. The country needs to be focused on capping the well and thereafter begin a concerted effort to rebuild there has to be more than just political posturing and the blame game. This includes both Liz Cheney and Ariana Huffington. There is a Presidential Commision that is going to figure all that out. Let's work on capping the well, start the rebirth of the Gulf and insure that the people of the Gulf are made whole. Let's also make sure that what happened in Alaska does not happen to the Gulf. Let's make sure that lawyers are not the ones who get away and get rich in the process. The Gulf and its' people deserve to be saved.
