His Majesty Mugabe's Coronation
His Majety Mugabe is about to be declared President. Al Jazeera reported about MDC supporters being held up at the South African Embassy in Harrare. His Majesty said that he will be "magnanimous". The State-run rags (sorry, newspapers) report that there has been a high turn-out for votes. For a government that has total control, they can anything they want. That's why the whole thing is laughable.
As for the mighty South Africa, it stopped further sanctions against Zimbabwe at the UN. It appears that Africa will let Mugabe get away with it even though there was a lot of noise that came out of SADC about the need to have a fair election and the need to postpone the election. Mugabe will be declared the winner of a one-person race, will be inaugurated and claim a new mandate. Why won't he just dispense with the facade of democracy and adopt what some of his other African brethren have done? Why do such people truly vie for "public" legitimacy? I wonder.
As Mugabe claims his "throne", the people of Zimbabwe will continue to suffer. According to the Saturday Financial Times, the people have to pay more to go to the market to try and pay for bread that does not exist. The inflation rate has become so rampant that government statisticians have stopped counting. How can a man whose country has gone down so far would be accepted with open arms? I wonder. Who suffers: The Ordinary folks!!!
The drama continues.......
