Dr. Singh Survies, but...???!!!???
Dr. Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, survived the no-confidence motion in the Indian Parliament Today. He is to be congratulated in light of the fact that he bet the farm in order to be able to get the nuclear deal with the United States passed. India has seen the rise of regional political parties. It is going to be a profound problem for India in the long-term. Both Parties (The Congress and the BJP) have to depend on regional parties to sustain themselves. Reports of vote-buying and intimidation was rampant. Dr. Singh's personal reputation has never been questioned. But, corruption in India is a fact of life. It is a shame for a country that has so much promise. What is worrisome is the fracturing of the two party system which has contributed to stability will destabilize India. I talked about it before in my reporting and analysis here. A country with a billion people, a multitude of minorities and languages is tough to govern. India, though, seems to grow and go on in spite of its' government--not because it. That's why names like Tata are starting to make their move. India is the emerging tiger. How it manages to steer its' ship will have implications far beyond her borders.
