War on Mumbai (Cont'd)

November 29th 2008 00:53
: Still Going On
CNN-IBN has called this tragedy "War on Mumbai". It is so appropriate. It is a war. There are still terrorists held at at the TAJ. Someone was clearly behind this. I am convinced of it. Whether it was homegrown or foreign-bred, the Government of India truly has a challenge on his hand. Over 155 people have been killed so far.

still at war
It is not over yet.....

I was especially bothered by what the Chief Minister of Gujarat said when he visited Mumbai. I commented on it and continue to be concerned. India is in the midst of a War right now. It seems to me that the country should come together and be united. But, it is clear that the BJP wants to act differently. I was so glad to see how Congress came back with the reaction as it did:

Congress Reaction to Gujarat CM

What is especially problematic is how the vision of Gandhi is being decimated before our very eyes. When Prime Minister Singh spoke to his nation, a bust of Gandhi was in the background. I wonder what would Gandhi say if he saw what was going on now. I wonder what he would say when he realized the discrimination that Muslims are faced with every day. I wonder what he would say when he saw the wide divide between the rich and the poor. As India races to take its' rightful place as one of our world's leading powers, it must continue to address discrimination and poverty. So many have died for no reason. One of the survivors said on CNN-IBN reminded the world that , "....If you let fear run your life, the terrorists would have won...." I could not have said it better myself.

Gaza......

November 28th 2008 07:00
: The Coverage Has Fallen off the Face of the Earth....
Gaza continues to be under siege by the Israelis. Israel has initiated the blockade with the support of Egypt because of the security threat from Hamas. Some have said that Gaza is the world's largest prison. I am truly trying to see and think through a solution that all can live with. Whatever ideas folks have had has only resulted in misery for all. Israelis have to continue to live in fear. Palestianians continue to suffer because they cannot simply have the basic necessities that is necessary. Israel pulled out of Gaza. But, it continues to control the Air, the Sea and Land borders of Gaza. I am sure Israel understands its' obligations. But somehow the suffering of the ordinary Palestianian that is neither a member of Hamas or any the families should never be forgotten. From what I have seen, it is in fact the case.

The plight of the Palestinians was discussed in this film showcased in Toronto last month:

The U.S. committment to Israel is unshakeable. Everyone in the region understands that. But, there has to be a true honest broker that could knock heads together. I wonder if General Jones and Senator Clinton can fit that role. The drama and the suffering will continue in the meantime. For anything to happen, there has to be a strong, credible leader. The Palestinians have nobody. The Israelis have no one either. So, there is a vaccum and not much will in fact happen for a while notwithstanding what the incoming U.S. Adminstration will do with all the other preoccupations that it currently has.

: May all the saints be blessed.....
I had the good fortune to attend a ceremony at my local City Council meeting earlier tonight. It was to celebrate scouting. The innvocation was conducted by a local minister who began with the Prayer of St. Francis. It truly moved me. The lessons of the prayer is so true as the world is undergoing a profound sense of change:

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

We should remember and never forget.

: An Interesting Discourse
The wide ranging discussions Pastor Warren and Senator McCain had continued on. One of the questions I felt was poignant. Pastor Warren noted that leaders are not stubborn and do change their minds. He then asked Senator McCain about a decision he had made and then changed his mind. He was quick to respond: Off Shore Drilling. He went on to note that we must attack the problem of energy on all fronts now. He reminded all of us that the United States is sending out 700 billion dollars a year to folks who are not at times that friendly and cooperative. Senator McCain's plan is dubbed the "Lexington Plan" and is available on his website. Leaders should be flexible and change their mind, while not forgetting their principles. George W. Bush seems to have understood that during the last months of his Presidency.

His response to the question of Abortion was to the point and without any reservations. His view is that abortion begins at the moment of conception. He told the world that he was going to be a Pro-Life President. As for marriage, Senator McCain was also adamant that it was a union between a man and a woman. Although an avowed Federalist, Senator McCain noted that he would back a marriage amendment if the States moved to force other states to accept their marriages. Evil must be defeated and the Senator brought up Osama Bin Laden. He committed to hunting him down. Osama is evil and evil indeed must be eradicated. I think his commitment is a bit over the top due to the realities on the ground in Pakistan and Afghanistan
