Not Easy to be Hopeful....
Barack Obama was on Meet the Press this morning. He and the Moderator Tom Brokaw talked about a wide array of challenges that Mr. Obama will face when he takes office January 20:
I found out today that this is Tom Brokaw's last day moderating this venerable newscast that I have become a fan of. Although I think the Obama campaign has done a fine job of reaching out with change.gov, I think that Meet the Press has been one of the few programs where at least some level of even-handness has been maintained. I wish Mr. Brokaw well and wish the new host, David Gregory, success as he takes over starting next week.
I found Obama to be quite subdued. He is preparing all of us to expect the worst before things get better. One example of how bad things are right now are in California. I am not a fan of the Governor. He rode into power promising a new era of Government. But, California has seen more of the same. Schools continue to suffer, the deficit has arisen and nothing seems to be moving at all. Things are so bad that the State may run out of money early next year. Obama noted that he understood the need for a "transfusion". Again, it is a start.
If I was asking the questions, though, I would have asked him about Africa and Zimbabwe. I would have asked him about Mexico and the havoc being brought by the drug cartel. But, I suppose priorities are priorities. What I worry about is when the violence starts spilling over. I am sure that with all the experience and intellectual vigour being brought in, some innovative ideas will come out of the deliberations and discussions. I will continue to withhold judgement. Although the time for talk is over. The time for action to help main street has become ever more crucial to avoid further falls into the abyss.
